GGBS

GGBS is a finely ground, glass-rich cementitious material designed to enhance concrete performance and durability. Produced by precision grinding granulated blast furnace slag, it works as a supplementary binder in cement and concrete systems. Its high glass content and controlled fineness make it suitable for demanding construction applications, from ready-mix concrete and precast elements to major infrastructure projects worldwide.

GGBS takes granulated blast furnace slag one step further by transforming it into a fine, reactive cementitious material designed for integration into modern concrete and cement systems.

Unlike the original granular slag, GGBS is precision-ground to develop the fineness and reactivity required for use as a supplementary cementitious material. This makes it a functional component that can be incorporated directly into cement and concrete formulations.

Built for Better Concrete

The role of GGBS is not simply to replace another material. It is used to influence the performance of the final concrete system.

When incorporated into suitable formulations, GGBS can contribute to concrete durability and long-term performance. Its use is particularly relevant in projects where material efficiency, durability, and lower-impact construction are important considerations.

High Glass Content, Controlled Fineness

The performance of GGBS is closely connected to its glass structure and grinding characteristics.

This product contains 98.2% glass content, providing the foundation for its latent hydraulic behaviour. Precision grinding then converts the granulated material into a form suitable for cementitious applications.

The result is a material designed for consistent integration into industrial concrete and cement production.

Where GGBS Fits

GGBS is suited to a range of construction environments:

  • Ready-mix concrete

  • Precast concrete elements

  • Cement blending

  • Large infrastructure pours

  • Roads and subgrade applications

This allows the product to serve both conventional construction and large-scale infrastructure requirements.

Designed for Infrastructure

Large infrastructure projects place significant demands on concrete materials. GGBS can be incorporated into appropriate concrete formulations where durability and long-term structural performance are key considerations.

Its application across ready-mix, precast, cement, and infrastructure systems gives manufacturers and contractors flexibility in how the material is integrated into their existing processes.

Resource Recovery

GGBS also creates a connection between the steel and construction industries.

Material generated during blast furnace operations is processed, granulated, and then finely ground into a product capable of becoming part of new construction materials.

This creates a circular material pathway:

Blast Furnace → Granulated Slag → Precision Grinding → GGBS → Cement & Concrete

Rather than ending its useful life after steel production, the material becomes an input for another major industrial sector.

Product Characteristics

The product is specified with:

  • Glass Content: 98.2%

  • MgO: 8.89%

  • MnO: 0.17%

  • Sulphur: 0.52%

  • SO₃: 0.12%

  • Chloride: 0.014%

  • Loss on Ignition: 0.17%

  • Basicity Index: 1.18%

The page also identifies GGBS as a latent hydraulic binder intended for high-performance concrete, durable infrastructure, and sustainable construction.

The Product Proposition

GGBS is essentially engineered slag for concrete.

Granulated blast furnace slag provides the starting material; precision grinding transforms it into a fine cementitious product; and the resulting GGBS becomes a functional component for cement and concrete applications.

That is what differentiates GGBS from the previous G-Slag product: G-Slag is the granulated material, while GGBS is the finely ground product designed to function as a cementitious binder.
